Weddings

Most of our Circuit churches are solemnized for marriages. If you wish to get married in one of our churches please contact the minister in charge who will arrange to meet with you to talk about your plans. Wedding preparation normally involves two or three meetings with the minister during which the christian meaning of marriage is discussed and details of the service gone through. Fees are payable and you will be informed of these when you first meet with the minister. It will also be necessary for couples intending to marry to give notice to the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages where you live, a small fee being payable to them. Without the Registrar issuing the bride and groom certificates we cannot legally marry you.

Marriage after a divorce

It is possible for divorcees to marry again in a Methodist Church. The minister will need to have a conversation with you about this, and we deal with each on a case by case basis. You can find more information here.

Same Sex Marriage

The Methodist Church does not condone any form of homophobia and seeks to offer the love of God to all. A process of consultation is underway in the Methodist Church nationally following changes to the law in Britain to determine our way forward, but this needs to be done carefully and sensitively, so will take time. At present the Methodist Church has not "opted in" which is a legal requirement to allow same sex marriages to be conducted in our churches. Formal services of blessing for same sex marriages are not currently permitted, however a minister may pray with a couple who request it. We are not able to conduct Civil Partnership ceremonies.
